Deptford Racing:

Deptford High Street has lost two arts spaces to the Betting Industry in the last year. Artistic and Creative Networks in the area are coming together to fight back with a ridiculous race between these two locations. Art lovers will run in fancy costumes or carrying artworks through the busy market.
Onlookers will be able to gamble their life away in this win-win situation.

Legend of London Bridge
The first bridge, which was built by Romans in 43 AD, was a temporary pontoon bridge. Soon after this, the first London Bridge was built. The next record of a London Bridge is 984 when a woman, who was thought to be a witch, was drowned at London Bridge. In 1014, Olaf pulled the bridge down by tying his ship to piers and rowing off at full speed. In 1176, the first stone bridge was built under the direction of Peter Colechurch. It took 33 years to build. This bridge stood for 600 years. In 1824 the present London Bridge was built under John Rennie. In 1971, London Bridge was reconstructed under the direction of Robert Beresford in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Aug 5 Katie Sollohub Long Shore Drift, Brighton Beach.

Train:
from the station, walk straight down to the seafront
turn left when you reach the sea, and walk eastwards towards the brighton
pier (the one with the fun fair)
keep going past the pier, stay on the lower road, towards the marina
walk for about 10 minutes this way, until you see a bar/nightclub under the
promenade on your left (it is painted light blue, and is an ornate building,
an old seafront cafe)
this is called CONCORDE2 and should be open for drinks and maybe food
(we will meet here if it is raining, and there is plenty of space under the
promenade to gather and perform)
Directly opposite the bar is a small footpath onto the beach, crossing the
miniature train track
It all looks a bit of a building site! but the beach is less crowded
here....
in total it is 30-40 minute walk from the station. you could take a bus from
the station towards the marina, or rottingdean/saltdean/peacehaven. these
should go along the seafront on the upper road, and you may have to guess
where to get off, or ask the bus driver for the CONCORDE?
From the pier, you could indulge in the mini-train, and get off half way to
the marina.
whichever way, we shall meet directly opposite the CONCORDE on the beach
nearest the sea (unless it is raining, then see you in the bar!)

alternative drive route:

At the first roundabout at the end of the A23, on the entrance into thecity, turn left onto the A27 and head towards Lewes and Eastbourne.
Keep going past the next turn off, and then you will pass the University ofSussex on your left,
Take the slip road off here and turn right over the main road and straightover mini roundaboput, heading towards Woodingdean and Rottingdean.
At Woodingdean, turn right at traffic lights towards Brighton. After W'dean, turn left at next traffic lights, which takes you across racetrack. This road is Wilson Avenue, and leads you right down to the sea and marina.
Keep going straight on at the traffic lights, under a flyover, and take therighthand lane which brings you up onto the seafront road on the East of
brighton, heading West.
And voila! from here it is a question of parking.... either take the next left, leading down directly onto the beach and lower seafront road, whereyou will find the concorde bar immediately on your right at the bottom of the slope, or park at the top or in streets inland and walk down.

Aug 12 Nico Pollen

The night of Saturday 12th of August is the peak of this year’s Perseid meteorite shower - Shooting Stars.

I propose a Bienalle adventure - at Ruislip Lido (accessible by public transport via Ruislip tube station and bus)

We will meat at the Waterside Tavern (by the bus stop) between 8 and 9pm, and walk round the ‘lake’ , anticlockwise, to the beach, where we will find a labyrinth drawn in the sand. There, or further along the shore we will engage in whatever we consider to be suitable, making very little light so as to see the shooting stars.

You can get back to central London by public transport by one am if you catch the bus at 11.30. I intend to bring a mat and a sleeping bag. There is open car parking near the pub.

The Lido

Ruislip Lido is a very mature artificial lake between some old woodland and rather overgrown ‘common land’. It is at the edge of the green belt, and therefore less affected from streetlight glare than most London locations.

It is accessible by car, or by bus from Ruislip tube station. It has a very interesting history - one source of info is the website www.ruislip.co.uk/lido.

The surrounding land is a nature reserve. Part of it is a site of special scientific interest.

I knew it as a child, where the area where the pub is now was a regular local authority ‘Lido’ - concreted lake floor, changing cubicles etc, It was the cheap summer day out for the locals.  Now it is much quieter -swimming is officially forbidden, but when I visited a few weeks ago, there were a few families, and children enjoying the water.

We can probably get away with a small fire on the beach

Labyrinth Dancing

There is a theory that the labyrinth’s origin is as a template for a dance (presumably ritual/religious).  I will delineate a labyrinth in the sand of the beach.  I may begin decorating the labyrinth - I hope others will contribute to this.

If you wish to, bring music, musical instruments etc.

Let’s experiment!

The Lido lake and surroundings is quite large, there's room for a lot to happen, so if you have any other ideas, bring them.

Aug 13 Cyril Lepetit  & Lindsay O'Nions
Cyril Lepetit & Lindsay O’Nions
invite you for a London Biennale meeting in the Gardens of the Horniman
Museum from 4pm on Sunday 13 August.

Join us for this informal meeting picnic with a mask and a musical
instrument as we would like to compose a group picture: a view from our
balcony.

The museum closes at 5.30 and the gardens close at 8.30pm. From 9 we
will be at the local pub “The Dartmouth Arms” (turn left out of the
main exit of the station).

During the afternoon will be at the back of the gardens, behind the
Horniman Nursery.

How to get there?

The Horniman Museum is situated at 100 London Road, Forest Hill, south
London, on the South Circular Road (A205).
Entrance to the Museum and Gardens is free.
The Museum is a five minute walk up from Forest Hill station and has
free parking in the surrounding streets.
A number of local buses serve the Museum with 176, 185, 312 and P4
stopping outside, and 63, 122 and P13 stopping nearby. See
www.transportforlondon.gov.uk/buses.

Forest Hill station is well served by trains from Central London,
Croydon and Surrey. Direct train services run from Charing Cross (2 per
hour on a Sunday - journey time about 20 mins) London Bridge (journey
time 13 mins - linking with the Northern and Jubilee lines),  New Cross
Gate (linking with the East London line).
