Mai Ghoussoub
from Anna Sherbany
Dear Friends
Mai Ghoussoub artist, performer, writer, communicator and a very very fine
human being died very unexpectedly on Saturday 17th February. She was a
wonderful friend and I am devastated that she is no longer here.
I know that there are many of us who will be very saddened by her sudden
death and perhaps will want to be together to celebrate her life.
I wanted to let you know that it was decided that the Book Launch at Saqi
this Thursday will go ahead after all and will also be an event in honour of
Mai and her life. It will no doubt be one of many.
I hope you are able to come along.
Please forward this to friends and acquaintances of Mai
warmest wishes

To the London Biennale from Adam Nankervis
The news recieved of Mai has been both shocking and deeply sad.We are all
facing a time of deep hurt in the loss of such a beautiful soul.
It has hurt me as it has and will all and her many freinds, colleaugues and
the many people whos lives she has touched.
I deeply apologise if this mail is the first you have heard of this
news.David Medalla,Director of the London Biennale thought it more sensitive
to share the loss at the next biennale meeting,in which Mai has participated
with such generousity of spirit, vision and beauty since its first
manifestation in 2000.
It has been a rare privelage to have worked with and known a lady with such
loving a spirit,a lady of harmony and humanity.
A lady that will be lovingly missed.
Thanks Mai-for the gift,Adamx

We met Mai through the London Biennale in 2002, and have met her
regularly at exhibitions and artists meetings. She was of our age, and we
still cant believe what has happened. We will always expect her to walk in
through the door, with her smile and wonderful kind words. We have also
exhibitted with her and her political, sensitive and provocative stance on
the middle east always produced intereting installations. Her dances with
Anna Sherbany's poetry at the 6000 chairs (2004) are still fresh in our
memory.
She will always be alive in our hearts....

I have no words to tell how deeply sad I am.
Mai Ghoussoub was one of the most genuine person I have ever met.

A Message from Saqi and Lebanon United
This weekend we lost our dear friend and colleague Mai Ghoussoub, who
passed away unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon. For those who did not
know her, Mai was a unique individual whose love of life, Lebanon and
literature inspired everyone who knew her.
No words could fully capture Mai's essence. As a tribute we have
therefore chosen to dedicate Lebanon United's book, A Lost Summer:
Postcards from Lebanon, to her memory. Mai gave the book her full
support and celebrated its publication with the words, "a real gem".
We at Lebanon United like to believe that her spirit and her love of
Lebanon are reflected through its pages.
She would have wanted the book launch to go ahead as she planned it,
on the 22nd of February at Al Saqi Bookshop. Please join us there to
celebrate the life of this remarkable woman whose memory will remain
in our hearts forever.
Tributes to Mai have been pouring in from all directions. Dana Kahil
Trometer has been collating these on her blog:
http://forafreelebanon.blogspot.com/index.html - which Mai loved.
Al Saqi Bookshop is located at 26 Westbourne Grove, London W2 5RH.

www.saqibooks.com Thank you for the
article...Mai was so amazing!!! i have been going through my old photos, as
Raoul says it will be hard to get a still of her from the Puki Procession
video, where I have her superimposed on top of Grand Army Plaza, dancing, to
my mind it was her dance of triumph over war and phallic monumentality. So
many memories! London Biennale! I wish I were with you. I think I first met
Mai while installing in Backfrabik in Berlin- I have wonderful pictures of
her and me in front of the Pukis. (Plus Marko! you and Gulsen listening to
each other's hearts, David and a naked man with special underwear that he
made for Marisol! Adam and awesome pictures of Mona...Arvinder everywhere,
Liliana,Katy and Jill.) Then I found a picture of Mai and Yolande- was that
a show that Adam put together at Kufa? This is when i really got to be
friends with Mai. I specially bought a copy of Guy's new book from her, and
she helped me research background info for my etching about Iraq. (not
done-but David gave her a copy of the prep drawing on canvas this summer- I
think she was going to use it for an auction.) I showed another poster of it
at Amoneyfesta in Cyprus this summer. It was only because of Mai that this
was done. How amazing that she did so much for other artists and still did
her own work! it was part of the great stream spiritual life that feeds our
planet and is the only thing that will save it. Sorry to go on but every
memory is precious. I would love to see photos of Texterminators that she
did with Jill last spring in Beirut. her legacy will live in all of
us...Love Reynolds My dear friends
Just now I opened this mail to find that Mai is not
with us any more. So simply and so so sad. and a void,
a whole, an incredible silence is here with me.
I was deeply enthusiastic working with Mai in a
project that she wrote and that we were going to
perform. We were sending each other mails about this
project so she was in my mind so much!!!
David, Adam, Arvinder, please add my name to all the
artists who are missing her and when you go to the
launch please be present for me. Present my respects
to her husband and all her friends and family.
I would like to be with you all so much. ALL MY LOVE
IN SADNESS.
Marisa just heard the news, but still cannot believe it!!!
anddd NO words could fully reveal how I feel... lost for words!
heaven holds her soul...
